Horse riding with Kosuke in Cairo (Abdul Hafiz Salie)

1981 - 1986

Kosuke lived in Cairo, Egypt for about five years in the 1980s. He worked as a tour guide for Japanese tourists taking them to the pyramids and on trips to historic sites in Egypt. His time in Egypt was one of the highlights of his life and in listening to him tell his stories, I had a sense that he had "found" himself during his time in Egypt. He had a wonderful and diverse group of friends from all over the world. They loved to talk about philosophy, religion, spirituality, politics, history, art and so much more. One activity that they loved to do together was go horse-riding among the pyramids and they did this almost every week on Fridays. In this video, one of Kosuke's dear friends, Hafiz, tells a story of their horse-riding experiences. I have put images from Kosuke's photo albums to Hafiz's story, including Kosuke's drawing of an eagle from that time. On the day of Kosuke's funeral procession through our community - we were all gathered around after walking through our village following his coffin. As we listened to a song that had come to me in the bath the morning after he died, a huge eagle came soaring around and around above us. So eagles have now become one of our symbols for Kosuke - whenever we see one, it feels like he is saying hello.
